Back-to-School With the Holston Foundation

This back-to-school season, the Holston Foundation is giving thanks to the generous donors who have left a legacy through endowments that fund scholarships for higher education and seminary. Over $152,500 was awarded in scholarships directly to students because of this generosity.

Through the generosity of endowments that support ministry grants, students were granted internships, and children across Holston are going back to school with new supplies and full bellies through feeding programs and ministries at local churches. After-school ministries and school backpack programs provide hope for students in some of our most vulnerable communities. Faithful and generous donors chose to invest in the future of these students.

We give thanks for the Eudow Hamm Evangelism endowment, the Anna Atchley McClure Memorial Mission fund, the Margaret Grizell Loving Scholarship, the Allen & Pauline Lindamood Memorial Ministry Scholarship, and many others whose vision continues to bless students year after year.

Meet a few of this year’s Holston Foundation Scholars:

Tafadzwa Samuel Mackwerere studies engineering science at Tennessee Wesleyan University. Raised in Zimbabwe, he is the son of a local Holston pastor and aspires to become a civil engineer.

Jonathan Werger is a student of physical therapy at Emory & Henry University. His faith has led him to this career of compassion for others, and he longs to one day open his own clinic to serve Southwest Virginia.

Cheyenne Cruz is a first-generation college student and a childhood cancer survivor. After graduating from Tennessee Wesleyan University, she plans to become a pediatric oncology nurse and share the love and hope that were given to her.

Chris Duble is preparing for his final year at Candler School of Theology. He serves at First UMC in Bristol, TN where he strives to help the church rediscover its mission through community outreach and a renewed vision.

Holston Foundation scholarship applications will open again in January 2026.
